What happened

Four Red Line stations on Chicago’s North Side reopened in July 2025 after a major reconstruction. CTA rebuilt the Lawrence, Argyle, Berwyn, and Bryn Mawr stops along with the track and support structures connecting them.

The most important change is basic access. Each station now has elevators and escalators, making step-free entry possible where it was not available before. Wider platforms, improved lighting, and real-time information displays were also added.

Why it matters

Accessibility upgrades change who can reliably use a transit system: riders using wheelchairs, people carrying strollers or luggage, older adults, and anyone temporarily dealing with limited mobility.

Completing four stations together also creates a longer accessible stretch of the Red Line rather than an isolated stop. It is visible progress inside a much larger challenge—making every station in a legacy rail system usable by everyone.

  • Elevators only create dependable access when they are consistently operational; the project summary does not report ongoing elevator uptime.
  • Many stations elsewhere in the CTA system are still not accessible.

  • Compare station elevator uptime and outage duration after the first full year of operation.
  • Ask disabled riders whether transfers, platforms, and station approaches work as designed.
  • Follow funding and completion dates for the remaining stations in CTA’s accessibility plan.
